Well defeat leaves Mason Hearts-broken

AS A Hearts fan in his younger days, Gary Mason was always keen to see the Hibees suffer.

Ever the pro, old rivalries wouldn't have crossed his mind as he gave a typically committed performance in the midfield at Motherwell.

But missing the chance to leave the Easter Road men languishing at the foot of the SPL probably hurt that little bit more.

A Pars win would have lifted them two points clear of Hibs and Mason admitted, "It would have been nice to go above them but it wasn't to be. We came here to try and get a bit of momentum and, especially with the game in hand, it was an opportunity to get off the bottom of the table."

The Pars' chances seemed to improve when Well skipper Stephen Craigan was ordered off in 17 minutes with the game goalless but it ended up a comfortable win for the Steelmen.

Mason said, "I thought it would have lifted us but it seemed to have the opposite effect.

"They seemed to get a lift when they went down to 10 men and it's obviously disappointing after winning on Saturday.

"They are a good team and it's never easy when teams go down to 10 men.

"They kept two up front and forced us back and it was one of those nights."

Mason knows the Pars are just a point behind Hibs with plenty of games to go and insisted the Pars were far from disheartened.

He said, "We've now got a hard away trip to Aberdeen but we're still in it.

"The games are coming thick and fast and we have to make sure we start winning games and build on the Kilmarnock performance."
